About Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia

Newcastle University UK, has established an international branch campus, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) in Johor, Malaysia to provide its undergraduate degrees in Medicine (MB BS) and the Biomedical Sciences (BSc), and opportunities for postgraduate study.

The operating company of the branch campus, (NUMed Malaysia Sdn Bhd) is wholly owned by Newcastle University and is registered in Malaysia under Company No: 792091-W with registered office at Suite 1301
13th Floor, City Plaza, Jalan Tebrau, 80300 Johor Bahru, Johor Darul Takzim, Malaysia

The programmes of study are identical to those of Newcastle’s UK-based provision, and lead to the award of the same degrees, conferred by Newcastle University, UK. By choosing to study at NUMed Malaysia, students will obtain a reputable UK qualification, from an internationally recognized university, at a cost significantly less than that of studying for the same degrees in the UK.

The undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) degrees were launched in 2009, the Biomedical Sciences BSc Honours was launched in 2013 and our Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences will be launched in 2016.

It is planned that a Foundation programme in Medicine and Science and our postgraduate provision will be offered from in the future.

On 20 November 2008 the University announced that they were entering into an agreement to establish an international branch campus in Malaysia for the teaching of medical subjects. The development of the 13-acre (53,000 m2) site in Johor, marks Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) as the ‘anchor tenant’ within the EduCity.

Staff moved into the NUMed Malaysia buildings on 3 May 2011, in preparation for students arriving in August. The Malaysian Bell’s Court building features a section which is designed to look like the Arches in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Branch Campus offers MBBS, which is currently accredited by both the General Medical Council and Malaysian Medical Council and Undergraduate Degrees in Biomedical sciences. Both programmes lead to a Newcastle University degree, and are identical to the course in the UK.

The main clinical teaching hospitals are Hospital Sultan Ismail and Hospital Sultanah Aminah in Johor Bahru, Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail in Batu Pahat, Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom in Kluang and a number of community clinics. All teaching and examinations are conducted in English, with the use of translators in clinical settings if required. Opportunities exist for students to spend time in the UK Campus, both through Student Selected Components (SSC), electives and intercalation.

Newcastle University UK is a modern university with a rich tradition of scholarship, a proud record of service and a truly global alumni network. The reputation and popularity of the University is backed up by the high-quality teaching and learning experience and the research opportunities available to students.
