About Kolej Universiti Poly-Tech MARA

Kolej Poly-Tech MARA (KPTM), formerly known as Kolej Yayasan Pelajaran MARA (KYPM) was established as a private higher educational institution under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 (Act 555) in September 2003. Managed by Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), KPTM offers a wide range of educational opportunities  in the field of information technology, computer science, accounting, business management, engineering and  health sciences.

It all started in January 1983 with the establishment of the Learning Resource Centre in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. In June 1983 Maktab Sains MARA (also known as MARA Community College) in Kuantan, Pahang was formed. At that time, it offered a twinning programme known as the American Associate Degree (AAD).  The programme was well accepted by more than 75 universities in the United States and New Zealand as a 2+2 transfer degree programme. This remarkable achievement later led to the establishment of KPTM Kuala Lumpur (1987), KPTM Bangi (1988) and KPTM Kota Bharu (1994). Other international strategic alliances were formed with the Northern Consortium of the United Kingdom (1988), the Australian Consortium of Higher Education in Malaysia (1994) and the British Consortium of Higher Education in Malaysia (1994) which enabled students to further their studies in a number of reputable universities in the UK and Australia. 1993 saw another alliance formed with the Dublin Business School, Ireland to conduct the ACCA professional accounting programme. A Partnership with Coventry University, United Kingdom (2004) has led to initiatives in producing world class graduates.

KPTM’s existing strength was built through its excellent track record and the merging of 2 MARA’s renowned institutions i.e. Kolej Yayasan Pelajaran MARA (KYPM) and Akademi Infotech MARA (AIM). KPTM has grown to be among the biggest Bumiputra private educational institution with more 12,500 full time students spread over 7 campuses in Kuala Lumpur as the main campus and branches in Bangi, Kuantan, Kota Bharu, Alor Setar, Ipoh, Batu Pahat and Semporna.

KPTM also established local collaboration with the public and private universities such as Universiti Teknologi MARA (1994), Universiti Putra Malaysia (1995), Universiti Malaya (1995), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (1996), Universiti Sains Malaysia (1996), Universiti Multimedia (1998), Universiti Utara Malaysia and also the Matriculation Centre, Ministry of Education Malaysia (1999).

Our commitment to life-long learning and flexibilty to education are reflected in the diversity of the programmes offered through the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE). Since its establishment in 1995, CCE has offered part time and distance learning programmes ranging from certificates, diplomas, degrees in a multitude of areas, as well as short courses conducted in collaboration with the local and international universities and partner institutions.

Today, KPTM is proud of its history and solid foundation that has brought continuous educational growth into the future. In recent times, we are able to extend our affordable quality programmes to many individuals in the effort to enhance knowledge and skills. Campus in the City

Located just 8 kilometres away from the Petronas Twin Tower (KLCC), KUPTMKL is truly a city campus. Its strategic location, for example, causes it to be well connected to all parts of the city of Kuala Lumpur by various modes of transportation. As such, getting around the city is easy any time of the day. The light rail transport (LRT) station is situated just next to the college while buses and taxis continually ply the routes to the city centre and the surrounding areas. A scheduled transportation to and from college is also provided for students who stay in the college residents.

The college comprises a compact and fully-utilised 5-storey building. It is equipped with lecture halls, classrooms and computer laboratories which together bring about a favourable teaching and learning atmosphere. The library occupies the whole first floor of the building. With its growing book collection and wide range of periodicals and journals, it offers an environment conducive for study and research. Free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the college building. There is also an automated teller machine (ATM) located in the college and for you to carry out your banking transactions. If this seems insufficient for you,   there are a couple of banks situated nearby at your disposal.

The library occupies the first floor of the building. With its growing book collection and wide range of periodicals and journals, it offers an environment conducive for study and research. The collection is organized according to the Library of Congress Classification System (LCC). The library system of management is partially computerized to facilitate efficient searching and browsing for library materials. The library houses approximately 7 workstations where patrons can search ILMU OPAC (the on-line catalogue), electronic database, and the World Wide Web.

Easy access to internet. We are committed in providing students with the technology and facilities required towards achieving academic excellence.

Sports Facilities

As a city campus, KUPTMKL has limited space for sports activities within its vicinity. To make up for these, however, we rent courts and fields to cater to our students’ needs for these activities.

A college bus is available to ferry students for most college activities. A specially-arranged transportation is also provided for students travelling to and from students’ hostel to college.

Student Area and Cafeteria

We have also allotted places at various areas within the college premises for students to unwind between classes or to mingle with friends. Other than that, should you need to buy snacks and stationery there is a cooperative shop on the fourth floor of the college building to cater for such needs.

As for your gastronomical indulgence, we offer you a cafeteria that provides a wide range of food and beverages. For those who are more adventurous, you may also venture out of the college compound to eat at the various open-air stalls and restaurants located nearby.

We realize that finding a suitable and cost effective place to live is most important to all new students, especially those who have come to a foreign land. We will assist you in your effort to find a suitable accommodation for yourself.

Student Hostel

Unfortunately, we do not provide accommodation within the college compound. Nonetheless, there are several student hostels which consist of 3 to 6-bedroom apartments located within 5km radius from the college. Each apartment is able to accommodate 4 to 12 occupants, depending on its size and for your information; every one of them is fully furnished.  More importantly, we have also hired a few wardens to look into your welfare.

All students’ apartments are equipped with the following facilities:

  • A common sitting area with sofa, television set and  a set of dining table
  • A kitchen with a cooker, refrigerator, electric kettle and washing machine
  • A few bedrooms (single or twin sharing) with beds, mattresses, pillows, bed sheets, pillow cases, wardrobes, study desks and chairs
  • Wi-Fi

The rental charge for the accommodation ranges from RM500 to RM700 per student, depending on the room type. This is inclusive of utilities and internet connection.

Applying for Accomodation

We will send to all sucessful applicants all the necessary details about how to apply for an accomodation in your offer.Nevertheless, we will only process your application for student hostel once you have confirmed your acceptance to study here and paid your fees.

Renting Private Accommodation

Another option that you could consider is renting a private apartment or house on your own or sharing it with friends. In such a case, you are responsible for the property and have to sign a rental contract with a landlord and abide by it.
Rental charges depend greatly on the distance of the house or apartment from the college.  The approximate cost of renting a room in a house near the college is RM300-RM500 per month, but this again is dependent on the size, location and facilities provided. Generally, the further away you live from the centre of Kuala Lumpur, the cheaper are the rents. Unfortunately, this may increase your travel time and costs. Utility and internet connection bills are normally not included in rental charges and are often shared with housemates.
At present, there are several places like Arena Shamelin Apartment, Shamelin Perkasa Apartment, Angsana Hilir Condo, Bukit Pandan Condominium and U-Thant Villa that are situated near the College. The estimated monthly rental of any 3-bedroom and 2-bathroom apartment is between MYR1, 500 to MYR2, 000.
